4×4 Transmission Repair In Louisville, KY

The term “4×4” generally means four wheel drive. It’s based on the idea that the vehicle has four wheels and all four can provide power to drive the vehicle. What sets 4×4 systems apart from all wheel drive is that 4×4 systems are selectable; that is, you can choose whether to operate them in two wheel drive or four wheel drive.

Generally the transmission is the same on 4×4 and regular two wheel drive systems. The power is split behind the transmission using a transfer case. The transfer case then sends power to two separate differentials: one in the back and one in the front.

Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some important differences between 4×4 transmissions and regular rear wheel drive transmissions. For one thing, capacity: a 4×4 transmission needs to be able to handle a lot more load than many two wheel drive transmissions.

Another is that, because these transmissions have a transfer case built into the drivetrain, diagnosis can be a lot more complex. Very often the transfer case can mimic transmission problems, which can lead to unnecessary repairs if you don’t know what to look for.

That’s why you should bring your 4×4 to your local Cottman center in Louisville, KY when you’re having a drivetrain problem. Our technicians are very familiar with every 4×4 system on the road today. They know how to analyze their behavior, and they can isolate problems in the transmission and transfer case.

So, when you bring your 4×4 to your local Louisville, KY Cottman center, you can be sure you’ll never pay for transmission repair unless you really need your transmission repaired.

And that’s a common situation, because most cars and trucks that come into a Louisville, KY Cottman center with a “transmission” problem don’t actually need a transmission repair. That’s okay, too, because your technicians at your nearby Cottman center are only too happy to get you back on the road… no matter what was causing the problem.

So, if your 4×4 seems to be behaving badly, get it over to your nearby Cottman center in Louisville, KY. They’ll do whatever’s necessary to get you back on the road, fast!

    • Last year we had a transmission that needed to be rebuilt in a 2009 Subaru Forester and brought it to Cottman based on their reviews. Greg and his team were sympathetic to the huge repair bill I was going to have, and looked for any way to safely save money. We also went ahead and replaced the timing belt and water pump based on the mileage. Having never been there before I called a few places to check that their estimate for that wasn't too much. The price was right in line with other reputable shops. 1 year later the transmission is still shifting as it should. Recently the same car had several other issues come up and I decided to try a shop down the street for diagnostics. Some of the numbers seemed a bit steep, so I took the car to Cottman for a second opinion. Greg, John and crew confirmed the issues, but the cost of the repairs seemed on par with my Google searches and I really felt comfortable having the work done there. I told them I need the car to be able to take a trip to Chicago and back, and they listed everything out in order of importance/ safety. To some it up, when we drop our cars off at Cottman, I don't feel like I'm being up sold a bunch services the vehicle doesn't need. And they stand by their work!

    • Have used Cottman transmission several times now on 1998 E150. Always professional, honest & fair priced. Greg will take the time to talk & explain the repairs needed even though the shop is busy. Would be my 1st recommendation to a friend needing repairs!

    • We love Greg and his team. They do a great job with our older vehicles, and they don't nickel and dime us. They are very honest about what needs to be fixed now, and what still has life in it.

    • Cottman handled my manual clutch replacement with exceptional service. After replacement, the truck drove like new again with the exception of a newly leaking axle seal. Cottman continued to take the truck in to resolve at no additional charge. Exceptional service and communication throughout the entire process. I highly recommend.
