Cottman Transmission & Total Auto Care, the nationwide transmission and auto repair brand, will celebrate Fall Car Care Month with a sweepstakes promotion where a lucky customer can win $100,000.

“We want to make everyone aware of the need to pay attention to their cars, especially during Fall Car Care Month,” said Sue Burg, Senior Director of Advertising for Cottman. “Drivers need to have regular maintenance to keep their cars running safely and smoothly, and fall is the time when cars need to be checked so they are properly prepared for the tough winter driving season.”

Fall car care generally includes:

  • checks of heaters, wipers, lights, and battery
  • replacement of filters for fuel, air, and transmission
  • flushing and refilling antifreeze in the cooling system. Fall is also a good time to check tires for wear and to check the car’s braking system.

Burg said the $100,000 Cottman Sweepstakes promotion will begin Oct. 1, 2015, and run through Nov. 30.

Customers who enter will be asked to rank in order their 10 favorite or most-needed Cottman automotive services, which include brake system inspection, charging system inspection, clutch service, cooling system service, exhaust system service, fuel system and throttle body service, platinum or premium transmission service, single point transmission service, and transmission reseal.

The entrant whose list matches a predetermined “mystery list” will receive $100,000. The prize will be split evenly if there is more than one winner, and if there is no winner, the contestant whose list is closest the “mystery list” will receive the $1000.

Cottman To Be Featured On ‘In America’ With Host James Earl Jones


Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care, a nationwide chain of transmission and auto repair, will be featured as a content provider on an upcoming segment of the Public Television program “In America,” hosted by legendary actor James Earl Jones.

“In America” is a series of short-form features that air during breaks between programs on many of the nation’s Public Television stations. The segment that was taped mid-April in-studio, with additional content from a Cottman center in Fern Park, Florida.

This specific segment will focus on the auto care industry, to help viewers understand the importance of preventive car maintenance.

“The ‘In America’ series is a great way to inform and educate people about the importance of proper auto care,” said Randy Wright, President of Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care.

Wright was interviewed for the segment, as well as Derik Beck, Vice President of Digital Marketing, talking about the importance of good customer service and explaining how regular preventive maintenance can help drivers avoid costly repairs or, worse yet, getting stranded on the road.

Cottman Transmission and Total Car Care held its annual convention on May 2, 2015, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The convention provided Cottman center owners with an opportunity to meet with one another while discovering new ways to hone their business skills.

“While the internet has leveled the playing field when it comes to digital marketing, it’s constantly changing. One person who was both an observer and a speaker for the convention was Dennis Madden, CEO of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA), a worldwide business association dedicated to providing business and technical support to the automatic transmission repair industry, and the publisher of GEARS Magazine.

Madden spoke about some of the features that ATRA has to offer its Members, which includes the entire Cottman chain.

While events of this type are fairly common for franchises, this one set a new standard for attendance: more than 70% of the Cottman centers were represented. That’s a startling turnout that caught everyone’s attention.

4th of July Holiday Driving – Cottman Man Says Don’t Drink And Drive

For most Americans, the 4th of July means cook-outs, picnics, swimming, boating, time spent with family, and friends and, of course, fireworks. But the nation’s birthday celebration is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities.

Cottman Transmission & Total Auto Care and its neighborhood car care centers throughout the nation remind drivers that police will be out in force during the days leading up to and including the Fourth of July, cracking down on impaired drivers. It’s part of the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign, coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). During the campaign, drivers who are pulled over and who are impaired will be arrested and charged, with no second chances and no excuses, NHTSA officials say.

Statistics gathered by NHTSA over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly half of all deadly traffic crashes over each year’s 4th of July holiday involved some level of alcohol impairment, up from the year-round average of about one-third. Impaired driving fatalities spike during nighttime hours, with the proportion of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes almost five times higher at night than during the day for the July 4th holiday period. More than 10,000 people die each year due to alcohol-related crashes.

Cottman offers several tips to avoid becoming a tragic July 4th statistic:

  • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins;
  • Before drinking, have a designated driver;
  • If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation;
  • If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact local police.
  • If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

A Father’s Day Checkup Can Keep Your Car Running Smoothly This Summer

Whether it’s a Father’s Day gift or simply a gift to yourself as a car owner, a summer tune-up is a good way to keep your car running smoothly and safely. The annual salute to Dads is a good time to think about summer car care, since this is when most of us spend more time in our cars, vacationing or taking weekend or day trips.

“A few simple steps at the start of the summer can keep your car running smoothly, safely and efficiently,” says Paul Dintino, an ASE Master Technician and Director of National Accounts at Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care, a brand with locations across the U.S. that services almost any make or model vehicle, foreign or domestic.

Easy Car Checkup

Here is what to look for when doing a summer vehicle checkup:

  1. Check the tire pressure.

Dintino recommends checking the air pressure in all the tires.  The recommended air pressure varies by make and model, so it’s important to refer to the owner’s manual.  It’s important not to exceed the recommended pressure, especially in the summer when air temperatures and road surfaces are hotter since air expands with heat.  Maintaining the proper tire pressure helps provide a safe and smooth ride, and it also helps with fuel efficiency, since under-inflated tires add friction that works against the engine.

  1. Be sure the air filter is clean. It’s important to check the air filter to be sure it’s clean. A dirty filter prevents the proper amount of air to get into the system, and an improper mixture of fuel and air retards the efficiency of combustion in the engine, lowering the gas mileage.
  1. Check wheel alignment.

The wheels should be checked at least once a year for proper alignment, Dintino says.  “It’s especially important to check the wheel alignment after a rough winter since icy roads and potholes can knock the alignment off,” he adds.  Improper wheel alignment can be costly, since it causes tires to wear unevenly and more quickly, and it also creates more drag which lowers gas mileage.

  1. Check the coolant.

Coolant helps prevent the water in the radiator from boiling and evaporating, which can leave you stranded.  Running the engine without proper coolant can also cause major engine damage.  It’s especially important in the warm weather of summer when air temperatures are higher and the car’s air conditioning is often in use.

Many of the new cars have what’s called “closed systems” which cannot be opened without proper equipment, so it’s best to have a service center check the water level and the amount of coolant.  If you have an older model that enables you to open the radiator, only do so when the car is cold.  Never open the radiator cap after the car has been running or serious injury could occur.

  1. Check your brakes.

Don’t wait until you hear your brakes squeak, Dintino says.  Brakes should be checked once a year, and the start of the summer driving season is a good time to have it done.

  2. Once you have a few names, go online and research those shops. Start with their websites. Do they present a professional presence?
