Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care Honored with Hermes Gold Award for Educational Video Series Cottman’s Transmission Physician Continues to Bring Home Awards

HORSHAM, Pa. – Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care continue its winning streak for its digital marketing expertise with another award in its collection, helping to elevate the brand’s reputation for quality and service.

Cottman’s web series “Transmission Physician,” featuring a stereotype-busting animated female transmission expert, earned the Gold Award in the 2017 Hermes Creative Awards competition. The series was honored with the award in the category “Electronic Media – Websites” for the subcategory of “Educational Video Series.”

“When we conceptualized the Transmission Physician, we knew she had the ability to be an industry leader,” said Derik Beck, vice president of digital marketing at Cottman. “This project represents the best of Cottman – our ability to put the service and education of our customers above everything while reinforcing the name we’ve built for ourselves in the aftermarket car care space. I’m incredibly proud of our team’s work on this project.”

Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the Hermes Creative Awards honor achievement and service in the communications profession. The international competition is specifically formulated for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing, and design of traditional materials and programs as well as emerging technologies. The 2017 Hermes Creative Awards is one of the largest of its kind around the world, with winners ranging in size from individual communicators and media conglomerates to Fortune 500 companies. Winning a Hermes Creative Award goes even further to raise Cottman’s reputation as an industry leader for the Transmission Physician video series as it contributes to the overall marketing strategy of Cottman.

“The Transmission Physician was originally designed as a way to pay homage to the women who have made our industry what it is today, and have played an extremely important role in the development and modernization of the auto industry,” said Beck. “Cottman stands for inclusivity at all levels, and we’re thrilled that the Transmission Physician is being honored at the international level, hopefully going even further to bring this message to the world.”

The Transmission Physician web series is a standout component of Cottman’s broader catalog of educational digital content. Using fun, accessible animation and themes, Cottman shares its educational videos on the brand’s website as a way for consumers to learn more about common car care topics.

As a specialist in transmission technology and repair, the Transmission Physician debunks common transmission myths, shares specialized, transmission-specific advice and explores related topics such as checking the automatic transmission fluid (ATF), why transmissions are so expensive, the process of how a transmission works, rechecks and more. She joins the Cottman Man, the brand’s well-known namesake who has long starred in his own digital series, teaching consumers about car care and tips to maintain the longevity of their vehicles. Together, these characters strengthen Cottman’s ability to connect with consumers and creatively share meaningful maintenance information that adds value to the excellent services already offered at every Cottman location.

Explaining the Problem

You just headed out to work or the store when you noticed it: a noise you’ve never heard before, coming from somewhere under the hood of your car. Or maybe it wasn’t a noise; maybe it was just something… not right.

You know you’re going to have to take your car in to get it checked. So you call your local Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care center and say… what?

It’s an important question: one that can make a big difference in whether your car gets fixed quickly or with a few extra days. Knowing how to explain the problem will go a long way toward getting your car fixed and the road quickly and efficiently.

So what should you know? Start with what the problem is: a noise, a vibration, or just something that feels different? Don’t try to diagnose it, and try not to tell the technician what you want to be done. Telling them to “Give it a tuneup” or “Align the wheels,” may not be the problem that you’re seeing or hearing. Instead, let the technicians know the facts will help them better diagnose the car.

The first thing you should do is see if you can work out as many details of the problem as possible. When does it occur? When you’re applying or letting off the gas? When the car is cold or hot? Right after you start the engine or after you’ve driven it for a while? Or does it go away after a few minutes?

Driving straight or turning? Slow or fast? On rough roads or all the time?

And what about the weather? Is it hot or cold out? Rainy or dry? Or doesn’t it matter? These are all things that can make a difference for helping the technician identify the problem and repair it right.

Best of all, can you show the problem to the technician? If you can, it’ll clear up a lot of question about what, exactly, you’re worried about. Since technicians fix many “noises” throughout the day, it may not be the noise that you had heard originally.

Want to make sure you get your problem fixed right? Take it to your nearby Cottman Center and explain the problem to them as best you can. Include everything you noticed, even if it doesn’t seem to make sense. Then let them do their job: You’ll both be glad you did.

Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care Wins Two Awards for Transmission Physician Educational Video Series

HORSHAM, Pa. – Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care continue to gain recognition for its digital marketing expertise, as the brand announced today it was awarded not one but two prestigious accolades honoring its groundbreaking online educational video series.

Cottman’s web series “Transmission Physician,” featuring the industry-leading animated female transmission expert, earned a Bronze Award in the 38th annual Telly Awards competition. The series was recognized both for “Craft Use of Animation for Branded Content & Entertainment” and for “Web Series for Video, Shows or Segments.”

“We’re so proud of our work with the Transmission Physician,” said Derik Beck, vice president of digital marketing at Cottman. “Our whole team put our hearts and souls into this project to reinforce both Cottman’s excellent services and our reputation as a brand. It’s humbling to be recognized for our efforts, and I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of my team.”

As the premier authority on creative excellence in local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video, film, web series and animation innovations, a Telly Award, represents a momentous acknowledgment of Cottman’s marketing efforts and the marketing value of the Transmission Physician. The web series was conceptualized as a subtle but meaningful acknowledgment of the contributions women have made in the auto care industry. The Transmission Physician also signals to both customers and potential franchisees that Cottman is focused on creating an inclusive environment at all of its locations nationwide.

“We first designed the Transmission Physician as a way to emphasize the contributions of women in our field,” added Beck. “Inclusivity is part of who we are at Cottman, and the fact that she won a Bronze at the Telly Awards shows the impact a web series like ours can have not only on our business but on the auto aftermarket industry as a whole.”

This newly decorated web series is one element of Cottman’s broader catalog of educational digital content.

The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 to honor excellence in local, regional and cable TV commercials, and is now one of the most sought-after awards by industry leaders, from large international firms to local production companies and ad agencies. For the 38th annual Telly Awards, judges evaluated submissions against a high standard of merit, recognizing individual distinction in creative work based on the combined scoring of all judges evaluating an entry. Due to the standards of the awards of excellence, judges may choose to award top honors to more than one entry or no entries at all in a particular category.

Before You Go on a Road Trip…

Summer’s just around the corner. And, if you’re one of the few people who’ve never seen National Lampoon’s Vacation, you may be considering a road trip for your vacation this year.

Well, before you head off to enjoy your well-earned break from the day-to-day grind, take your car over to your nearby Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care center for a complete, pre-vacation checkup.

What’s involved in a pre-vacation checkup? Basically, the technicians go over your car from bumper to bumper with a fine-tooth comb, looking for anything that could create a safety hazard or might let you down while you’re away.

They’ll check the lights, wipers, and washers. Then they’ll get under the hood to make sure all the fluids are full, the filters are clean, and the battery terminals aren’t corroded.

They’ll put your car up in the air and check the tires, brakes, shocks, and exhaust. And they’ll look for anything that might be loose, worn, or damaged.

Of course, if you’d like, they’ll also take care of any maintenance services you’d like to have done before you go: oil changes, transmission services, tune-ups, fuel system services — anything you’d like to do to make sure your car is ready to handle the demands of a long trip.

As Chevy Chase taught us, the road can be a cruel mistress. To avoid problems, your best bet is to make sure your car is safe and ready for sustained travel. Your friends at your nearby Cottman center are here to help.

Openbay Took Part at the Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care National Convention Originally published on the Openbay Blog, by the Openbay Staff on May 1, 2017.

Openbay took part at the Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care National convention this past weekend.

For those not familiar with Cottman, they specialize in automotive transmission repair and maintenance in addition to providing total auto care. They have been around for decades with the first Cottman Transmission Center established in 1962. Today, they boast locations from coast-to-coast throughout the United States and Canada.

The convention was hosted by Cottman corporate for all franchise owners, suppliers, and partners. The convention had breakout sessions where franchise owners could learn about new and innovative ways to grow their business and introduce more efficiency during daily operation.

Openbay’s breakout session covered the topic of how to acquire and retain the modern day consumer; the millennial, the largest generation in U.S. history. We explained the importance of understanding the millennial’s buying behavior and expectations when interacting with a business.

Millennials were brought up with the existence of the Web and mobile devices. It’s natural behavior for millennials to use an online service to acquire a service or product. For instance, when they need a ride they will tap away on their smartphone to hail a lyft or uber. If they need an item for their home or for work or need an item for their current sport or for whatever occasion, they use Amazon or eBay. When they need a specific service, such as auto repair or want to have food delivered, they will either search google or use to their favorite app. Hopefully, openbay for the former need. 🙂

We drove home the point of embracing this group of buyers – view this group as an opportunity – modify the way you acquire customers to be more in line with their buying behavior and be able to engage them digitally.

The modern consumer’s expectations when acquiring a product or service. Their preference is to be engaged digitally with the business they are transacting with.

There was also a vendor showcase where companies had the opportunity to discuss their product and services in detail with Cottman franchise owners. Openbay had a live version of its product on display and traffic was plentiful.

How Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care Found Its Storytelling Heart By: Derik Beck, VP of Digital Marketing, Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care

A key to creative, successful communication and marketing lies in gaining a fresh perspective on the industry you’re working in and the brand you represent. We’re creatures of habit and can fall into comfortable routines. Periodic brainstorming sessions and adoption of a mindset that embraces being as inventive as possible can counteract a retreat into the same old, same old. Specific tactics might include giving your website a facelift, developing enticing, consumer-facing promotions or contests or evaluating what competitors in and outside your industry are doing. Return to the basics with a team story idea session— the more originality and variety you incorporate into campaigns, the more effective they can become. No matter the industry, pushing for creativity allows marketing and communications professionals to tell the most compelling stories possible. Some of the best marketing strategies revolve around finding untold stories. Here are three tactics that have proven to be invaluable in uncovering untold stories.

LOOK AT WHAT’S MISSING
As alluded to above, it can be easy to fall into a creative silo, which runs the risk of turning your campaigns routine. Sometimes it’s merely a case of being so close to a project that it’s hard to see it needs a new element. For example, the Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care website utilizes a series of marketing videos featuring an animated character called the Cottman Man. As we began planning for a new animated character, we wanted something unique. It didn’t take us long to see that an effective way to differentiate the new character from our existing animation had been right in front of us for quite some time: There was no female representation in our digital characterizations. As a result, we decided to make our new animated Transmission Physician character a woman. Besides honoring women past, present and future in our industry, it celebrated and recognized our women-run franchises. It also served as a signal to customers and potential franchisees that the brand values an inclusive environment, acknowledging women’s contributions to car care. By taking a step back, we were able to be more creative and inclusive in our messaging.

TALK AROUND THE STORY
Often the most compelling campaigns come from identifying primary and secondary goals, and using one to accomplish the other. This tactic requires a fair amount of creativity. Cottman wants to find new customers and franchisees, but we’ve realized we can accomplish those goals best by showcasing current franchisees. You could say we come to the situation sideways. A method we employ to highlight our services and draw in talented entrepreneurs is by highlighting our franchisees on local TV news segments, where they give tips on car care specific to the local weather and demonstrate their expert knowledge. Creative marketing efforts like this tell a story to multiple audiences at once and can accomplish more than one marketing goal in the process. One way to do this is by publicizing smaller features of your business—your delivery people always are on time, customers often call to remark on the quality of your products, store operators regularly become involved with community fundraising—to subtly draw attention to broader narratives of your organization: placing a premium on customer time, following excellent quality control processes, community give back as a core company value.

FOCUS ON COMMUNITY
Thinking creatively often means keeping an eye on the larger picture, and for many organizations that have become fixtures in their communities, the bigger picture is the neighborhoods they serve. Sometimes a marketing opportunity may not seem to yield immediate financial benefit for shareholders, or franchises, but they have a positive impact on your relationship with the greater community. During the 2016 holiday season, Cottman released a coloring book series featuring the Cottman Man and distributed it to children’s hospitals. Our goal was to spread holiday cheer to those in need. In fact, the effort had several residual effects. Focusing on creating a positive, meaningful product for local kids refreshed our corporate and franchise teams. It also further established the brand as a community partner. Maintaining a perspective on what’s really important, and the core values of your organization can help kick-start creativity by aligning a campaign with a worthwhile cause. As communications pros, it is vital to remember how storytelling fits into the broader corporate mission. Communicators have the chance to tell stories that resonate with internal and external stakeholders. The key to that resonance lies with your ability to push the limits of creativity to produce something truly memorable.
